Lung Cancer Symptoms and Diagnostic Tests

If patients exhibit lung cancer symptoms or have an x-ray that shows something suspicious, he will need to obtain a proper diagnosis. There are many diagnostic tests for lung cancer that tell doctors more than an x-ray or other simple medical exam would. Only your doctor can determine which of these diagnostic tests is the best way to tell if you have lung cancer or not.

Along with x-rays, doctors use CT scans (computer topography) and PET scans (position emission topography) in order to get a closer look at areas of concern. The PET scan involves using a radioactive isotope to light up areas and show tumors because of how they absorb the material.

The most effective lung cancer diagnostic test involves taking a sample of lung tissue through a biopsy. The biopsy can be done in several different ways.

A bronchoscopy is one way to get a sample of lung tissue and involves putting the patient out using anesthesia while a tube is inserted through the nose or throat. The tube has tiny scissors at the bottom that can remove a tissue sample. The sample is then reviewed by a pathologist.

Another method used is called fine needle aspiration wherein a tiny needle is used to remove tissue from lymph nodes near the lungs. A pathologist will examine the fluid to see if there are cancer cells.

Fluid in the lungs (pleural effusion) is a common symptom of lung cancer so removing the fluid is helpful for doctors trying to diagnose lung cancer. Thoracentesis is used to remove fluid from the lungs fro this diagnostic test. A needle is inserted in the lungs down through the chest wall and ribs and fluid is removed and examined by a pathologist.

Additional tests and exams may be required for your doctor to properly diagnose you with lung cancer. Your doctor will need to get a complete medical history. Lifestyle choices like smoking will increase your chances of developing cancer. He will ask about your family history since cancer can run in the family. Your doctor will use pulmonary function tests like spirometry to see if your lungs are working like they should.

Approximately 25% of people diagnosed with lung cancer do not exhibit any symptoms during the early stages of the disease. Early detection is important because it provides you with more options for treatment and the best chances of recovering fully. That is why possible symptoms of lung cancer should not be ignored.
