The Connection Between Stress and Diet

Exercising on a regular basis helps you cope with the stress in your life. Eating a healthy diet also helps. It is hard to find reliable nutrition studies so the stress and diet connection has not been proven. Often, studies end up contradicting each other but the basic idea behind the research is what we all know: eating a healthy diet with lots of fresh produce and protein helps us cope with stress.

You can use supplements to improve your stress levels if you don't get enough of the nutrients from your diet. One chemical you need enough of is serotonin, which helps your brain cope with the stress you experience. Serotonin does not start to work for about a half an hour and the effects last about 3 hours so it has to be used at the right time. Many people have high serotonin levels in mornings but the levels go down as they day goes on. You should take that into consideration when you plan your daily diet. Eating afternoon snacks that are healthy will increase your serotonin levels.

Another part of the stress and diet connection is how a good diet helps you avoid other bad habits that increase your stress. People under stress often find themselves making poor food choices. These unhealthy foods can actually decrease your serotonin levels.

It is important to live by moderation with regard to exercise and diet. Eating poorly is going to lead to you exercising less. The more you let your body go, the more start to feel worse about yourself. You have to start spending time focusing on yourself to break the cycle and deal with your stress.

It is not easy to break the cycle but you can do it if you work hard. The more you exercise, the more you will have a healthy chemical balance in your body. Another benefit of eating right and exercising is you will feel better about yourself as you see your body change. You will take pride in your hard work and that will reduce your stress.

You should eat regular meals every day and not skip meals or you won't be able to cope with stress. Don't let stress interfere with your healthy diet and exercise routines. Stick to your schedule and you will be able to better cope with your stress and you will see your life changing for the better. When you are eating, focus on the positive things you are thankful for. Put all the thoughts about stress and problems out of your mind. Let your meals be a time of relaxation and calm.
